5 Years

I never knew that my wife would be able to put up with me for any period of time, much less 5 years, yet here we are, still happy and in love.
I really did not think we would have any time to ourselves this weekend. There was the possibility of family coming in town and needing to crash while they were driving through. There was our 6 month old daughter who is always requiring our attention (not a bad thing, mind you). And then there was the simple fact that with both of us having relatively new jobs, we could not up and leave on a cruise. Yet, we needed some time.Â
With everything going on that was…well…going on, I actually thought this would be a very quiet anniversary and was content with that. Since the wife was at work on our actual anniversary day I made plans to have a floral arrangement sent in.

She was able to break away from nursing long enough to call and say thank you. She also said that they were the largest and most beautiful arrangement she had ever received. There were other nurses that received flowers that day and my ego was happy to hear that hers was the best. I have always been nervous about ordering flowers without actually seeing the arrangement first, but this company did a wonderful job.
Saturday, after enjoying sleeping in all the way to 7:15am (yes, that is sleeping in for us), we slowly got out of the house and made our way up to Perimeter Mall. The family that might have been staying in town had made other plans and we were dying to get out of the house for the day. Spending time with my girls was therapy for me and our daughter did great being out all day. The biggest shock of the entire day was the anniversary present my wife bought for me:

I am a self-admitted watch fanatic, but to this date, the nicest watch I have ever owned was a $500 Seiko. Never in a million years had I expected to own something such as this. The weight of the watch is perfect (I love large-faced heavy watches) and the colors are magnificent. My wife actually found this watch on the Breitling website and was astounded that I went directly to it at Bailey, Banks & Biddle.
With her parents staying in town, we were able to have quality babysitters and also duck away for the night to the Westin Peachtree Plaza where we made reservations at the Sun Dial. Neither of us have stayed at the hotel before and did not quite know what to expect. It was nice to be able to drive into the city and get away for a night. It is not as if we live very far from the city to make it a true vacation, but when you need some time alone, you just need some time alone. The Westin was a nice place for us. The room was great (42nd floor) and we had a wonderful view.
After enjoying each other’s company and a few appetizers in the lounge, we were in full relax-mode.
A funny side-note involves another couple that my wife observed stumbling around with a bottle of wine. The guy strolls into the restroom and his female companion closely follows.
“They just went into the same bathroom,†said my wife.
“Yea right. There is an exit sign right there. They just left.â€
“No they didn’t. Go to the bathroom and look.â€
So I stumble that way myself, open the door to the men’s restroom, and sure enough, I see some men’s shoes and directly in front I see some women’s high heels. Laughing, I walked back to our spot and told my wife she was right.
“Are you serious! You gotta go back in there now!â€
Not really know what she expected me to do, I went back to the bathroom and could see some gyrations happening in the stall. Since the urinal was too close to the stall, I just washed my hands and could see that they were trying to finish up. The high-heels were now moved out of sight and I could hear some snickering going on. I threw away my paper towels and as I left I loudly declared “OK, you two can finish up now!â€
When I sat back down my wife saw them scurry out of the bathroom and down the stairs.
We later enjoyed a wonderful dinner one floor down. Not that it is surprising, but Atlanta is so much more beautiful from the 72nd floor of a hotel than it is on street level.
Now it is Sunday and time to get back into the swing of things. Back into the work schedule. Back into work. Back into Atlanta traffic. But I tell ya, this was one hell of a nice weekend for us.
