Welcome a New Lens to the Family

After a recent workshop with Dean Zulich, I found some limitations with some of the lenses that I have. So I saved up and bought some nice glass: the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8.

With what little shooting I have done with the lens, I am more than blown away by it. I am sure that my humble opinion cannot quite stack up against the countless hours others have poured into their equipment reviews (i.e. Ken Rockwell’s excellent write-up on the lens), however, I am merely excited about this. Up until now, I have purchased only Sigma brand lenses for my Nikon (noted exception of my Nikon 50mm f/1.4). While they have not been bad lenses by any stretch of the imagination, I feel this lens stands above and beyond any other in my collection.
You can read far more technical reviews than mine, however, I will say that the lens is fast and I have had a blast shooting with the 2.8. It has really changed everything up for me and opened another door for my photos. I still have plenty to learn, though, but I have thoroughly enjoyed what I have been able to do thus far.
My only complaint about the lens so far is just the weight. It is quite heavy compared to what I am used to. By the time the lens, battery grip, and flash are all loaded on the camera, it gets even heavier. I believe my next investment will be a decent strap to help shift some of the weight (I really like the looks of the Black Rapid strap).
Just my 2 cents.

Congrats man! It’s exciting stuff and I can’t wait to see some of your photos with your new lens. Capturing priceless moments of your family, friends, experiences is just worth it to me. I picked up a Flip Mino just so I can quickly video those “out-of-the-blue” random acts of craziness my boys do… like this one: http://www.vimeo.com/1962085 This little video is worth the $145 I spent on the Flip, especially when I show it to his future wife and kids!!

That is pretty cool. Photography is expensive enough so I have no intention into moving anywhere near video. ;-)
