Is my purchase of new glass really art news, you ask? Well… yes…. yes it is. About a week or so ago, my latest addition to the camera equipment family arrived: The Nikkor AF-S VR 70-200 f/2.8 and I couldn’t be happier with the purchase.
While my review cannot add much to what is already out there regarding this lens, I just wanted to say how thankful I am for saving the money to purchase quality glass such as this lens. In fact, my previous two purchases, The Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 and this new lens, were both done after saving and patiently waiting to get a truly wonderful lens. Sure, these cost a bit more than the Sigma or Tokina models, but after using the Nikon brand and Sigma brand lenses, I have no plans to ever return to using a Sigma model.

A great example was the first test run I was able to give the 70-200. I was out photographing some law enforcement training. The officers and deputies were going through a driving course at a local park. It was a great opportunity to really see what the lens could do. Not once did it let me down and I was able to snag the shots that I wanted. Toward the end, I actually got out the Sigma 18-200 (which I have not used in a very long time) and threw it on the camera. It was loud and slow. At the time I bought that Sigma lens, it was great. I was not really into photography the way that I am now and it served as a perfect walk-around lens for me. Now, I should probably sell it.
If you are looking into expanding your photography equipment, consider first what type of photography interests you most. That might mean the difference in a portrait lens, wide angle lens, zoom lens, etc. Then save the money and buy top notch glass. You can always upgrade your camera, but you will never regret having a really great lens to shoot with.
